Gonzalo to me personally seems like a man who has all the answers but never has the time to formulate them into a theory and create something which could if said in the right way influence the Monarchy, thus Alonso, to have a better working sate.
Gonzalo does not judge a book by it's cover he takes his time to asses a situation or a person, which could possible mean that Gonzalo would not judge Caliban on what Prospero says but he would see Caliban as a human.
Gonzalo is the man you have to go through (if you are not higher than Gonzalo) if you want to talk to the king or consult the king's ethic's. Supposedly Gonzalo would have know what the king's reaction would be and just decide on the spot what the king's decision would be. But Gonzalo has no luck cheering his companions, the fact Gonzalo doesn't stop as soon as Alonso snaps at him shows he's loyal to the king.
